How it works

Your take-home pay starts with your gross pay — salary plus any bonus or overtime — then subtracts anything you salary sacrifice, commonly into superannuation, before tax is worked out. Income tax uses marginal brackets with a tax-free threshold. The Medicare levy adds 2% for most people, phased in gradually just above a low-income threshold. If you do not have private hospital cover and earn above a further threshold, the Medicare levy surcharge adds up to another 1.5%. If you have a HELP (including HECS-HELP) debt, a repayment is calculated on a separate, stepped scale once your income passes its own threshold.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Medicare levy the same as the Medicare levy surcharge?

No. The standard Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income and applies to almost everyone above a low-income threshold. The Medicare levy surcharge is an extra charge, up to 1.5%, that applies only to higher earners who do not hold private hospital insurance — it does not apply if you have private hospital cover.

How is HELP/HECS repayment calculated?

From the 2025–26 income year, it is a stepped scale: no repayment below the threshold, a marginal rate on income in the next band, a higher marginal rate in the band after that, and a flat percentage of your total income once you are above the top threshold. This tool uses your taxable income as an approximation of “repayment income”, which in reality can also include some other amounts, such as reportable fringe benefits.

Does salary sacrifice reduce my superannuation guarantee?

No. Salary sacrifice is separate from the compulsory Superannuation Guarantee your employer pays. If you salary sacrifice into super, that amount is deducted from your pay before tax, in addition to the super your employer already pays on your ordinary earnings.

What if I have private health insurance?

Tick the private hospital cover option and the Medicare levy surcharge will not apply, regardless of your income. The standard 2% Medicare levy still applies either way.

How accurate is this calculator?

It uses published income tax, Medicare levy and HELP repayment rates for the current financial year. It does not include every offset or the family Medicare levy thresholds, so this is a planning estimate rather than a payslip.

Method: published Australia 2025–26 financial year rates. This is an estimate, not tax advice. How our calculators work.

Let’s work it out.

$70,412.00

Take-home pay from a $90,000.00 gross salary

Step by step

  1. Gross pay (salary + bonus + overtime): $90,000.00.
  2. Income tax on $90,000.00: $17,788.00.
  3. Medicare levy: $1,800.00.
  4. Take-home pay: $90,000.00 minus $19,588.00 = $70,412.00 a year. Your employer also pays superannuation of 12% on top of this under a standard salary arrangement.

Results may be rounded and are an estimate, not a payslip. See the method and limitations below.
