How it works

Since 2019, the Welsh Government has had the power to set different Welsh Rates of Income Tax, varying each UK band by up to 10 pence in the pound. So far, Wales has kept its rates identical to England’s, so Welsh taxpayers currently pay exactly the same Income Tax as the rest of the UK. National Insurance and student loan rules are also UK-wide and unaffected by this.

Frequently asked questions

Does Wales have its own Income Tax rates?

Wales has the power to vary Income Tax through the Welsh Rates of Income Tax, but has not used it so far — Welsh Income Tax currently matches England, Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK exactly.

Could Wales set different rates in future?

Yes. The Welsh Government could vary each band by up to 10 pence in the pound at any time. This calculator uses the current, unchanged rates, and would need updating if that changes.

Is National Insurance different in Wales?

No. National Insurance, student loan thresholds and pension rules are set UK-wide and are the same in Wales as in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

How accurate is this for Wales specifically?

It uses the current UK-wide Income Tax bands, which apply in full to Wales. See the main UK take-home pay calculator for the full method, including Scotland.
