How it works

Quebec is calculated differently from every other province: it sets its own Income Tax brackets (14% to 25.75%), collects tax independently of the CRA, and gives Quebec residents a 16.5% abatement (reduction) on federal tax to compensate. Quebec also runs its own Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) instead of CPP, and Quebec Parental Insurance (QPIP) alongside a lower Employment Insurance rate than the rest of Canada.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Quebec so different from other provinces?

Quebec is the only province that collects its own income tax independently of the CRA, rather than through the federal collection agreement every other province uses. It also runs its own pension plan (QPP) and parental insurance (QPIP).

What is the federal tax abatement?

A 16.5% reduction applied to Quebec residents’ basic federal tax, to account for the fact Quebec collects its own provincial tax separately rather than through the standard federal-provincial arrangement.

Is QPP the same as CPP?

They are closely aligned parallel pension plans with similar contribution rates. This calculator uses the CPP rate as a reasonable approximation for QPP, since Quebec runs its own plan rather than participating in CPP.

How accurate is this for Quebec specifically?

It uses Quebec’s own published 2025 tax brackets, the federal abatement, QPIP and an approximated QPP rate. See the main Canada take-home pay calculator for all provinces and territories.
