Tip calculator

Enter your bill amount and a tip percentage to find the tip amount and the total, including the tip.

How to calculate it

A tip is a percentage of the bill added on top as a thank you for service. Multiplying the bill by the tip percentage, then dividing by 100, gives the tip amount. Add that to the bill to get the total to pay. For a bill of 50 with a 15% tip, the tip is 50 × 0.15 = 7.50, making a total of 57.50.

Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal tip percentage?

This varies by country and type of service — commonly somewhere between 10% and 20% where tipping is customary. Check local convention for the specific situation, since expectations vary widely around the world.

How do I split a bill and tip between several people?

Calculate the tip and total as normal, then divide the total shown by the number of people. For an even split of both the bill and the tip, everyone pays the same share of that total.

Should I tip on the total before or after any service charge?

This tool calculates a tip on whatever bill amount you enter. If a service charge is already included in your bill, decide separately whether an additional tip is expected, since practices vary by venue and country.

Can I use this for a percentage other than a restaurant tip?

Yes. It works the same way as the percentage calculator — any percentage of any amount — so it also suits a delivery tip, a service charge, or a similar percentage add-on.

How are the results rounded?

Amounts are rounded to two decimal places, matching how prices are normally shown.

Method: standard arithmetic. Examples are illustrative. How our calculators work.

Let’s work it out.

7.50

Total with tip: 57.50 (bill 50.00 + 15% tip)

Step by step

  1. Calculate the tip: 50 × 15 ÷ 100 = 7.50.
  2. Add the tip to the bill: 50 + 7.50 = 57.50 total.

Results may be rounded. See the method and limitations below.
